ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — An effort to restart high school sports is moving forward.

Thursday a downstate lawmaker, Assemblyman Colin Schmitt (R, 99), introduced legislation to allow all interscholastic sports to be cleared to play this year using proper COVID-19 safety protocols.

He was joined by coaches who support the bill.

Right now, high school sports considered high-risk like basketball, football, ice hockey, and more are on hold.

"We have the data from over 34 states that proves that all sports can be safely played here in the state of New York," Schmitt said. "You can drive just 22 and a half minutes from where we're standing right now, to Northern New Jersey, and those students are playing."

Local Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes (R, 133) is co-sponsoring the bill.
