GREECE, N.Y. (WHEC) — Police in Greece are celebrating the successful rescue of two children kidnapped from their home. They say a team of federal investigators found Dimitri and Shakeria Cash, safe, in Alabama.

Police say this case is far from over; there are still more suspects they're trying to find, but less than 48 hours after they were taken, and 40 minutes after they got word of where they might be, the children were safe.

An emotional Greece Police Chief Drew Forsythe delivered the news that 5-year-old Dimitri and 3-year-old Shakeria Cash have been found safe.

"This is truly a moment that we will cherish forever to be able to bring these kids home safely," Forsythe said.

The children were abducted by two men from their foster home on English Road in Greece Monday night. Almost 48 hours later, investigators tracked a car rented in the Rochester area to Mongomery, Alabama and a federal task force there arrested a woman and searched her car.

"Located on the floorboard, under blankets in the backseat, were Shakeria and Dimitri," Forsythe said.

Forsythe says investigators don't know the whereabouts of the children's Father Dimitri Cash senior, although they have spoken to him and they want to talk to him but Forsythe is not calling him a suspect.

At a briefing Wednesday, officials said they have only one woman in custody, nothing on the two men involved in the abductio, and that they're "not even close" to wrapping this up.

"It is far from over. Every person responsible for this abduction will be sought and apprehended," Forsythe said. "They will be held accountable for what they did."

Officials say it could be a couple of days before they can go through the steps needed to get the children back to their home in Greece but they're apparently… fine.

"The marshals that were on the scene," US Marshal Charles Salina said. "They reassured us. They said the children are now eating chicken nuggets and watching Tom and Jerry cartoons."

The children's paternal grandfather says he was tremendously relieved at the news and that he is unaware of any family connections to Alabama.
