ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) has canceled all 2021 Winter State Championships and postponed all high-risk sports until authorization is granted by state officials.

The NYSPHSAA says the decision was made with input from the NYSPHSAA membership and the 11 Section Executive Directors.

The decision to postpone all high-risk sports, regardless of which season they're played, was made with the increase in COVID-19 hospitalization rates across the state in mind.

The decision to cancel championships was made due to concerns about increased travel, hotel accommodations, transportation logistics and planning for meals, as well as venue capacity.

"Our schools were expressing concerns about putting students on busses for five to six hours at a time, about putting students in hotels for one to two nights, how we're going to feed those students once they get to that state championship event," NYSPHSAA Executive Director Robert Zayas said. "This is drastically different than participating in a regular-season event."

Low and moderate-risk regular season sports are still permitted, they just won't advance past Sectionals.

The 2021 NYSPHSAA Spring State Championships are still scheduled at this time.
